HIGHWAY TO HELL.

It is easy to see why there is such a huge question mark regarding the suitability of Avon’s death valley bitumen strip that snakes its way to, and through York, to take hundreds of huge rubbish-laden trucks to the proposed monster dump at Allawuna Farm.

No wonder it is now lined with kilometres of road bend warning signs and the speed limit reduced by 10 kph.

It is because of the ‘C’ word- CARNAGE!

The toll is bad, eight dead and 32 seriously injured- a massive 42 casualties. For the statistician that is 1.4 serious motor vehicle accidents per kilometre and nearly three per year over 15 years from 2001 to 2016.

One was actually at St. Ronan’s. My best friend was killed there  when his 4WD slipped onto a verge and was catapulted into a tree. Its roof struck the trunk 2 meters above the surrounding topography.

The speedometer was frozen on 108 kilometres per hour and his body was identified by DNA tests on his toothbrush.

He was not speeding, just the victim of a poorly designed stretch of road.

It is food for thought for anyone who believed, or still believes, this tip is a good idea.

  1. I have driven up & down this road for over 25 years, like many other roads in WA it was originally a track used for horse traffic, with the advent of the IC engine it has been very slowly improved but still follows the old horse traffic track. It is still a narrow winding twisty road & the cautious driver obeys without question the numerous speed warning signs, stays within the posted speed limit, only passing on the so designated road stretches. He or She then hopes that oncoming traffic & other road users will be of the same mindset? Without a doubt, even with the present traffic volume it requires great improvement, if Allawuna does become a huge rubbish dump with the accompanying increased rubbish truck traffic then one must assume that the road death/injury toll must only dramatically increase.

  2. On the subject of Great Southern Highway, has anyone had their windscreen chipped or cracked during the current road works? Main Roads have rejected any liability following my damage claim to them. Perhaps we can put pressure by numbers on them? Please advise.

    1. Yes, six hours after purchasing a brand spanking new Hyundai i30, you can expect loose chippings for at least the next three months. I don't understand why we can't have hot-mix surface like the Gt Eastern.
BTW David, some accidents go unreported for various reasons, these aren't serious accidents, but more to do with being a little over the limit.
